College Football Playoff Expansion

Over the past few years, there has been debates on if the board should allow more teams into the prestigious College Football Playoffs. It has been heavily argued whether it should grow to 8 teams, 12 teams, or even more. Earlier in September, the 11 board managers voted and approved the 12-team model that will be implemented by 2026, but some are pushing for the model as early as 2024. This is a big change and should dramatically change the college playoff climate.

During the past 10 years, the National Championship game has been dominated by various SEC teams, with a few outliers. Notably, Alabama and Nick Saban have been racking up appearances in the National Championships since 2009. We have been seeing the same teams dominate the polls due to their appearance, which already puts them ahead of other teams. They usually have better schedules, as well as priority in the TV times they will play next season. In the long run, this can recruit more potential players due to their glory and constant time in the public. This is why we continue to see the same teams year after year.

The College Football Playoffs will take the top 4 ranked conference champions and they automatically get a free pass into the next round, while the rest of the 12 teams will play each other. After those teams have played, there will be a semifinals and quarterfinals at multiple bowl games.

This decision is projected to allow more teams into the running for the national title, as upsets will eventually happen. This will make the playoffs more exciting, and get more fans involved.

Do you think that the decision to expand the playoffs was a good one? Let us know in the comments!
